In the market for a mansion?
Casa Casuarina, also known as the Versace Mansion, has gone up for sale for $125 million. Casa Casuarina is located in Miami Beach’s South Beach neighborhood right across the street from the Atlantic Ocean! It is one of the largest mansions in Florida (19,000 square feet, 10 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms).
Casa Casuarina was built in 1930 by Alden Freeman, who modeled the home after the Alcazar de Colon mansion in the Dominican Republic. (Side note: Alcazar de Colon was the home of the son of Christopher Columbus and is said to be the oldest existing house in the Western Hemisphere.) Gianni Versace bought the mansion and invested about $33 million into Casa Casuarina. Among the upgrades was a mosaic-covered courtyard, frescoes on the home’s walls and ceilings, and a 54-foot gold-lined swimming pool with over one million hand-laid mosaic tiles.
Gianni Versace died in 1997 when serial killer Andrew Cunanan shot him twice on the estate’s front steps as he returned from his usual morning walk. The Versace Mansion is still one of South Florida’s most popular tourist stops, where there is always a line of vacationers waiting to pose for pictures on the front steps where Versace died.
