Filly Brown

The Sundance film festival is in full swing and people are buzzing about Filly Brown. The movie is centered in East LA and is about a female hip hop artist, Maria “Majo” Tonorio aka Filly Brown, who has had a tough upbringing. Her drug addict mother is locked up and her father is a former gangster who is trying to get his life straight. Music is an outlet for Filly Brown and she is given the opportunity of a lifetime in the music industry, however she has to make a decision whether to stay true to her music or sell her sexuality as a pop sensation to make more money. This film was selected to be included in the US Dramatic competition for the Sundance film festival which is a huge honor!

The star of this film, Puerto Rican actress Gina Rodriguez, is getting rave reviews about not only her acting, but her singing and rapping talent! People were actually asking her when her album was coming out and for good reason, too: the film’s music producers were Latin hip-hop veterans Lisa “Khool-Aid” Rios and Edward “E-Dub” Rios. Filly Brown has a great supporting cast as well and features Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jenni Rivera, Noel Gugliemi, Chingo Bling and Baby Bash among others.

I personally haven’t seen this film but it is on the list of movies I want to watch. Check out the footage below of the directors Youssef Delara and Michael D. Olmos discussing the film and surprising Gina Rodriguez about Sundance…

And here’s some behind the scenes footage compliments of Chino Bling…
