Can Tattoos Cover Scalp Scars?
Bald spots are frequently thought of as being linked to the aging process, but what about other kinds of permanent hair loss? Accident-related scars, burns, birthmarks and transplant scars are just a small list of things that may cause bald spots. Although hair transplant techniques have undoubtedly improved in recent years and cause less scarring than they used to, due in part to widespread use of less invasive FUE (follicular unit extraction) techniques, all transplant clients are still left with permanent scarring following their procedure.
Not all individuals are suitable for hair transplants as participants require sufficient donor hair from the back of their head. Used in conjunction with SMP®, less donor hair is required, meaning more people could potentially become suitable for a hair transplant treatment if they desire. Each micro hair is individually crafted to perfectly replicate a working follicle, providing not only a darker scalp, but the real illusion of thicker, fuller hair.
Scalp Micro-pigmentation (SMP®) effectively camouflages all types of hair loss as well as noticeable markings upon the scalp, like scarring. It has successfully been used upon follicular unit extraction and follicular unit transplantation scars. SMP® is a specialized hair loss treatment that replicates real shaven hair follicles on the scalp. It was developed as both a cosmetic procedure for men suffering with all types of hair loss, and as a medical procedure to help conceal scars, burns and birthmarks, as well as the full spectrum of alopecia strains. The HIS Hair Clinic’s sophisticated scalp application is administered to the head, usually over 2-3 sessions spaced about a week apart. Creating the illusion of hair is the main function of scalp micro-pigmentation. SMP® provides two solutions for hair transplant clients, to camouflage strip and FUE scars created by hair restoration surgery, and to provide an illusion of greater density for those clients with insufficient donor hair.
What level of camouflage is possible?
Exactly how well a hair transplant scar can be hidden depends on the scar itself, however most clients experience a level of camouflage of at least 70%. SMP® treatment successfully camouflages a hair transplant scar allowing men to be able to cut any remaining hair very short without worrying about their scars being exposed or visually noticeable.
How long will SMP last for?
With proper care and treatment, including using high sunscreen when outside, SMP will commonly last for many years. In a healthy client with a normal immune system, we expect that a full series of SMP treatments will last eight to fifteen years before needing a touch-up. In certain clients who have strong immune systems or who work in outside sun constantly, the treatment may need to be touched up sooner.
Does SMP look real?
A typical scalp hair from a normal Caucasian male is about 77 micrometers in diameter (67 Um in those of Asian descent, and 120 Um in those of African descent). Typically, SMP dots placed in the dermis are 90 to 150 micrometers in diameter. This might seem a bit larger than a real human hair, but when viewed from six inches or further away, the size is indistinguishable from real hair follicles.
Is SMP reversible?
Yes. SMP pigmentation can be removed with an electro-optic Q switched laser, which is used to heat and break-up the SMP pigmentation for easier absorption by phagocytes in the dermis. SMP is fairly easy to remove in most cases because the pigment is not deposited as deeply as normal tattoo ink.
