Need a laugh? Well I have good news for you, Tim Burton’s new film DARK SHADOWS starring Johnny Depp will be out in theaters on May 11th! Dark Shadows is based on the television series created by Dan Curtis and is also starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Eva Green, Chloe Moretz, Bella Heathcote and Gulliver McGrath. I’m looking forward to this film because Johnny Depp never disappoints!

The movie starts off in the year of 1752 when Joshua and Naomi Collins set sail from Liverpool, England with their young son Barnabas to start a new life in America. Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) grows to become a rich, powerful playboy… until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green) – who happens to be a witch. The heartbroken Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death by turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find a very dysfunctional Collins family and his once-grand estate in ruins.

I hate shaving. Years ago I went to a dermatologist and saw that their office offered “permanent” laser hair removal and I ended up making an appointment and had mixed results. Years and years later, I barely have any hair growing back in certain areas that they treated however there are other areas where there was not much of a change. Maybe certain areas of your body need more treatment sessions… but it got to be too pricey for me and I just stopped going.

Now, here I am again looking for that quick fix! Waxing and epilation treatments are too painful for me to do consistently, so I started to look into at home laser hair removal systems. The major laser hair removal systems I found were Remington iLight Pro, TRIA Hair Removal Laser, Silk׳n SensEpil Hair Removal and Silk’n Flash&Go Hair Removal. It took me a while to figure out which one to get, I looked over the product details and user reviews on Amazon and each product had its praises and complaints. Tria had the most reviews on Amazon, 168, and its average rating was 3 stars. The iLight Pro had 79 reviews and an average of 4 stars, while Silk’n SensEpil Hair Removal had 17 reviews and 3 1/2 stars. The Silk’n Flash&Go, which is probably the only at home hair removal system that you could use on your face, had no Amazon reviews.

Price played a major factor in my decision as well (I am a broke graduate student, after all). Remington’s iLight Pro sells for $250, Tria’s Hair Removal Laser is $395, Silk’n SensEpil Home Hair Removal is $500 and Silk’n Flash&Go Permanent Hair Removal is $339. So the reviews plus price played a major part in my decision to get Remington iLight Pro. But do you get what you pay for? I guess we’ll find out.

One thing I did notice is that on the iLight Pro‘s box it says results last 6 months, whereas on the Silk’n website they state “permanent” hair removal. I don’t know if companies can get sued for claiming that their product leads to permanent hair removal when it doesn’t always achieve permanent results, so to me either i-Light Pro is either protecting itself or its laser isn’t as strong as the ones in Silk’n products. Anyways, here is my review on Remington i-Light Pro, I will continually update this blog with my experience since I barely got it about a month ago.

First things first, here’s a video about how i-Light Pro works:

As you can see from the video, those who get the best results are those with fair skin and dark hair. Thank goodness I haven’t been tanning lately! Remington recommends performing treatments every 2 weeks for the first two to three treatments, and then only treating areas that are still having hair growth as needed. Here’s my experience so far:

1st treatment (03/23-03/24)
So I got my iLight Pro on Friday and saw that you should test an area of the skin first to see what type of reactions you get (redness, pain, etc). I left it on the lowest strength and zapped an area of my skin and I really didn’t feel anything. No redness or anything. So I waited until the next day and all was fine, so I increased the strength by 1 more level… zapped… not too bad… increased level again… zapped another area… not bad.. etc so I increased it to the highest level and I definitely felt the “snap” a bit more but it was completely tolerable.

I DID have trouble with the Remington i-Light Pro unit initially and was going to return it. When I used it on Saturday, I did one zap and then the unit kept beeping and could not be used. The Cool Down Mode Indicator icon was flashing, and after looking at the instruction manual that meant the hand piece unit or base unit was too hot and or my room was too warm. So I followed the instructions and waited patiently for the unit to “cool down”, the beeping went away, and thankfully I completed the rest of the treatment without any other interruptions.
I can see how people could be skeptical about these products because it tends to feel like a toy that is just flashing light on your skin, so is it really strong enough to prevent hair from growing back? We’ll see.

Here is a video on how to use the i-Light Pro:

2nd Treatment (2 weeks later: 04/07)
It is still too early to see if this product is working or not, especially since I do shave regularly when I see hair growth. But so far I don’t see any huge change in hair growth, which is to be expected and I know seeing results takes time. Remington also mentioned that sometimes it may look like your hair is still growing but it is actually the hair falling out. So we shall see! Had it set on the highest level. Easy peasy. One thing I will say though is that the skin area I’m treating DOES feel smoother for a longer amount of time, and that could possibly be due to less stubble and or it taking longer for hair to grow back, which is nice. And while it is too soon to say anything, I haven’t had any ingrown hair incidences which is something that irritates my skin regularly and I hope to avoid with this treatment as well.

Since I kept the unit at its highest energy level, I felt the *snap* more when treating and my skin got red. I was told (when I got the ‘professional’ laser treatment) that you feel it more when there’s more hair in that particular area and when it gets the hair. I’m guessing you feel it more when the laser gets the hair while it is in its active growth phase but I could be wrong. There was also that burnt hair smell while treating! Lol. The redness went away within about 5 minutes.

I plan on using this every 2 weeks to try to catch hair in its active growth phase.

Hair Growth Stages

In case you didn’t know, laser hair removal targets hair growth in the Anagen or “growth” phase. In this phase the hair shaft is attached to the papilla so the laser is able to attack the melanin in the shaft and disable the papilla. The length of time of the anagen phase depends on genetics and location on the body (scalp, eyebrows, legs etc).

The Catagen phase occurs after the Anagen stage. In this phase, the hair is ready to shed. Laser treatment offers little benefit in this phase. And the last phase is the Telogen or “resting” phase. In this phase the hair isn’t developing or growing and can’t be treated. The hair shaft is fully detached from the papilla during this phase so the laser can’t attack the melanin in the shaft to disable the papilla.

This is why it is important to be consistent with your laser hair removal treatments and it is recommended to get it done at least every 4-6 weeks.

3rd Treatment (+ 2 weeks later: 04/22)
I just did my 3rd treatment and I am happy to report some good news, and some strange news. The good news is that there is definitely less hair growth… I stopped shaving like I usually would – it’s hard to break that habit – to see if there is a difference and there is a significant amount of hair that is not growing back! But what’s weird is… ok, well I’ll have to explain. My left side used to have more problems as far as hair growth and ingrown hairs. I have like 3 small scars from ingrown hairs that kept coming back in the same spots. My right side of course had hair growth as well but no ingrown hairs. The funny thing is now my left side seems more perfect than my right side and barely has any hair growing back. Whereas my right side is improving as well, but there is this one small area that looked like it had a small group of hair (like 5-10 hairs) growing out. It was so out of place, especially since the rest of my skin was pretty much hairless.

So for the 3rd treatment Remington says that you don’t have to treat the whole area, you could just zap the areas where you see hair growth. So for my now nearly-perfect-hairless left side, I saw only a few hairs in a few spots so I shaved one small area (where there was 1-2 hairs) at a time and zapped the exact spot where I just shaved the hair off. On my right side I zapped the whole area again, since I’m guessing more of those hairs were in the active growth phase again and that was probably why that small group of hair popped up out of nowhere lol.

I’m already very pleased with my purchase. My skin is smoother for a longer amount of time and I see less hair growing back. I can’t say it’s permanent yet since I haven’t been using it that long. The few hairs that do grow back, take much longer to grow back. Just the fact that it is reducing my shaving time makes me very happy. Since I’m already seeing results right now, I’m going to start to treat another area and see how it goes. I don’t want to go crazy and start zapping my whole body though, I want to make sure I effectively treat each area.

I will follow up in 2 more weeks for another update and to let you know if that small group of hairs that mysteriously appeared will be gone lol.
To be continued…

Primavera Skin: Get Your Body Ready

By Ivette Manners for Las Fabulosas

Exfoliate Gently
Many chicas scrub and scrub to remove that layer of dead skin that’s caused by cold temperatures and dry heat indoors. But dermatologists say scrubbing actually dries skin. “Rough exfoliation can cause irritation or harmful tearing of the skin layers,” says Dr. Patricia Wexler, a New York City–based dermatologist. Instead, buff away dull, flaky skin with a mesh bath sponge and a mild or glycolic body wash — a sugar-based acid that also refines bumpiness. “Bar soaps tend to strip your skin of its natural oils,” says Dr. Marina Peredo, a New York City–based dermatologist. If you prefer bar soap, use one that is made with hydrating ingredients.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Lots of hydration is key for beautiful skin. “Moisturize with a light oil or lotion as soon as you get out of the shower,” says Renee Cobos, a California-based dermatologist. “Let the skin absorb the oil or lotion for a few minutes. Then, pat your skin dry.” Afterward, apply another layer of moisture with an emollient-rich cream.

Pamper Your Pies
Your poor feet get battered with boots and neglected through the long winter months. They need un poco más atención. Soothe rough and super-dry skin on your feet with petroleum jelly, says Dr. Rebecca Baxt, a dermatologist in New Jersey. “It’s the thickest and best type of moisturizer.” Also, try petroleum jelly mixed with Epsom salts to soften feet, elbows and knees.

Get Fuzz-free
Skin isn’t completely smooth without the proper hair removal. If you’ve slacked off on shaving during the winter months, it’s time to get it back into your beauty routine. But don’t do it too frequently, as you’ll irritate your skin. Wait until the hair is long enough to get a close shave.

For those who haven’t heard, I’m in the process of growing my curly hair out again after relaxing it for over 10 years. I was a bit hesitant at first but after doing some research online it seems like there are tons of better products out there now in comparison to my grade-school days! It looks like many companies have finally figured out what the issues are with curly hair and what curly haired girls want – and Pantene Pro-V is one of them!

It turns out that the natural twists of curly hair can cause cuticles to weaken and lift. The cuticle is the outer layer of your hair that is made of individual scales that lay against one another. The cuticle is what is supposed to be flat and protect the inside of your hair against damage as well as keep moisture in your hair. This is why it is important to keep the cuticle of your hair closed to retain moisture (and avoid frizz)! This is a problem all curly haired girls deal with since the curls of our hair tend to weaken hair cuticles.

And if that wasn’t enough, curly hair is said to have the highest number of fiber-to-fiber interactions which causes friction and damage. Thankfully Pantene came out with their Curly Hair Series products that have ingredients to control the movement of moisture in and out of the hair shaft. Their products also lubricate hair to minimize damage caused by the high number of fiber interactions.

I was lucky enough to receive some Curly Hair Series products by Pantene Pro-V and I can definitely see the difference with my hair. Their Dry to Moisturized Shampoo and Conditioner helps to retain moisture in your hair to keep your hair from getting frizzy! They also have a detangler, the Pantene Pro-V Curly Hair Series Light Conditioning Detangler, that conditions and moisturizes your hair while detangling it! You have to be gentle when you brush your hair to prevent further damage and this detangler is absolutely the way to go.

Pantene Pro-V’s Curl Shaping Gel and Curl Enhancing Spray Gel are basic hair products that every curly haired girl should have. Both can be used when your hair is wet or dry, both tame frizz and both keep your curls looking fresh all day.

And finally, the life savers of the bunch: Pantene Pro-V Deep Moisturizing Treatment and Professional Level Damage Repair Ampoules. Remember how I mentioned the cuticles earlier? Well Pantene Pro-V’s Deep Moisturizing Treatment helps to seal and smooth the cuticle, allowing for better control of your hair’s moisture. Like any deep conditioning product, you should use this once a week after you shampoo and leave it on for 5 minutes (according to instructions). I have a tendency to leave it on a bit longer to be honest with you, and when I have time I even throw a heating cap over it since warm and moist heat opens the cuticles of your hair and allows the conditioner to penetrate the hair cuticle even more in my opinion.

The Professional Level Damage Repair Ampoules does just that – repairs damage. I haven’t had a hair cut in a while and I have some split ends and this product is really helping with that! This product repairs cuticles and strengthens your hair and you also leave this on for 5 minutes after shampooing. It’s supposed to be an “as needed” type of hair treatment for when you go crazy with your curling iron and blow dryer but if you want to use it regularly, it is recommended to use it about every 2-3 days.

I’m really happy about how everything is coming out with my hair, and I’m finding that dealing with my curly hair isn’t as difficult as I thought it would be! I mean, it’s different, but it’s doable. I know now that curly hair tends to get DRY so it is a must to deep condition weekly!

Now that I have the basic products I need, I think I just need to find a good hair stylist that could cut curly hair and I’ll be good to go

Oh and feel free to check out Pantene Pro-V’s Curly Hair Series products by clicking here! People have left reviews on their website as well so you don’t have to take my word for it, and GOOD LUCK!

Las Fabulosas: Beauty & Style

Pretty for Primavera

By Belén Aranda-Alvarado for Las Fabulosas

“Pastels are really in this spring season,” says Ermahn Ospina, a Los Angeles–based makeup artist who has worked with celebrities like Rosario Dawson, Carla Gugino and Emmanuelle Chriqui. If you hear the word “pastels” and are thinking about Easter-egg shades of safe neutrals, think again. Pastels are packing a serious punch this spring, and the color range is broad enough that every woman can find a new tone to experiment with.

The top five shades to try if you want to update and warm up your color palette are:

1. Shimmery pale blue: Great for eyes. Stick to formulas that have subtle shimmer instead of heavy frost in the formula.

2. Golden-toned green: Think iridescent and bright, like vibrant lime instead of staid forest-green.

3. Medium-pigmented pinks: “Medium” being the key word: Try pops of vivid bubble-gum pink on the eyes, cheeks and lips.

4. Very soft violet: Apply a wash of light opalescent purple on the eyes or lips.

5. Natural nudes: This spring season, nude does not equal boring. Look for velvety peaches, shimmery taupes and glowing bronzes.

Feeling color-shy? Ospina urges those of you who can’t bear to part with your year-round makeup shades to get over your can’t-fail staples by focusing instead on one feature and experimenting with that. “The easiest way for a woman to update her spring makeup look would be to play with lip colors,” advises Ospina. Just changing up your lip gloss will show you the light that color brings to the whole face. Be bold and playful, urges Ospina. It is spring, after all.

Belén Aranda-Alvarado lives in New York City with her husband and 9-year-old daughter. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, The Washington Post Magazine and Latina magazine. Belen’s articles have previously appeared in Las Fabulosas.

Reyes del Runway: Designers to Watch at Miami Fashion Week

By Julie D. Andrews for Las Fabulosas

Stylistas will descend upon Miami Beach International Fashion Week, which kicks off on March 20. Founded in 1999, the runway extravaganza showcases emerging and established talent from across Latin America and around the world. Here are some of the diseñadoras whose stars are rising.

Paola Peres
Paola Peres, who designs leather accessories, is “nerviosa.” She’s making her debut of her latest collection, Complementos. The pieces include leather clutches, purses, belts and accessories. “Every piece captures all my soul, my feelings,” says Peres, who learned to work with leather while studying in Italy and Argentina. She generates ideas “from colors, textures, scents and even songs. I love to travel and comb the towns looking for inspiration.”

Maria Hamilton
Last year’s winner of the International Emerging Jewelry Designer of the Year award, Maria Hamilton, will also be in attendance, armed with new jewelry. “Winning the award gave me an incentive to do more; it pushed me to design high-end pieces.” With her new collection, she says, “I focused on big pieces and made earrings with precious stones.” Hamilton, who worked in finance for seven years, recalls how she made the switch. “Wherever I went, people stopped to ask where I got my jewelry, which I had made,” she says, laughing. “It was my hobby.” After a year of jewelry-making classes at a local museum, things became clear: “I wanted to do this full-time. I love this.”

Liliana Montoya
Before becoming a beachwear designer, Colombiana Liliana Montoya was a modelo and a television presenter. Growing up in Medellin, Montoya loved sports and staying in shape. It’s no wonder that by 2006, the 5-foot-11-inch stunner had launched High Swimwear, a line of upscale bathing suits. “The brand is based on the evolution of the bikini,” Montoya says of her reinterpretation of the bikini, which once was worn “for athletic purposes.” Today, she also makes one-piece swimsuits, and she infuses every ensemble with a fresh femininity, a lot of bright colors and bold prints.

Julie D. Andrews is a writer based in New York City.

If you have been to my new Pinterest page you’ll probably notice that my Dream Home board is more active in comparison to my other boards. The reason for this is that I just love looking at big beautiful homes, it is a guilty pleasure of mine. Sometimes when I am taking a break from the craziness that is my life, I look at luxurious homes. It’s just fun to look at, to see what is out there and it gives me ideas for my future home!

I received an e-mail out of nowhere this past week about the website Top 10 Real Estate Deals and I love the site so far. The site posts entertaining and unusual real estate news, such as Max Weinberg (Bruce Springsteen‘s drummer and Conan O’Brien‘s former band leader) reducing the price on his New Jersey home to $5.9 million. It’s a six bedroom house with two game rooms, professional movie theater with its own lobby, recording studio, stone wine cellar and a fancy barn. Oh and by the way Weinberg also installed stadium lights around the home’s pond for hockey games and ice skating if, you know, you’re into those sorts of things.

Some other articles on their front page right now is Jon Huntsman Senior‘s $49.5 million Utah ski home and the beautiful Beverly Hills home that served as the backdrop for the late Whitney Houston‘s movie The Bodyguard. If you’re into real estate like me, I recommend you check out toptenrealestatedeals.com (I will be pinning from them as well)!

This year, Univision’s annual Premio Lo Nuestro music awards took place in Miami. Top Latino artists gathered for the event and one of the special performers of the night was Shaila Durcal who is the daughter of legendary singer Rocia Durcal. Shaila sang her latest hit “Tanto Amor” with a live painter and mariachi backdrop and was also nominated for Artista Femenino Regional Mexicano del Año with EMI Latin Records. Shaila looked great on the red carpet with a one-of-a-kind dress looking beautiful with glam provided by hairstylist and makeup artist Ariel Lopez. Get the scoop on how Shaila achieved her look below!

First things first – SKIN CARE!
The key to a beautiful look starts with great skin. To create Shaila’s gorgeous glow Ariel used Olay Total Effects Age Defying Wet Cleansing Cloths to hydrate and clean the skin.

To moisturize the skin Ariel applied Olay Regenerist Wrinkle Revolution Complex, which instantly smoothes away the look of fine lines and wrinkles so she was camera ready.

To finish prepping his canvas he used Olay Total Effects Line & Dark Circle Minimizing Brush, a light, non-greasy daily moisturizer that instantly reduces the appearance of darkness under the eye for a bright and fresh look.

MAKEUP
Ariel started with Simply Ageless Eye Corrector #230 to get rid of dark circles and give skin a younger look. Then, he applied the hydrating foundation Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation in Natural Beige #140 to even out her skin tone and give her cheeks a silky glow with COVERGIRL Cheekers Bronzer to create the effect of a sun-kissed tan.

The central focus of Shaila’s makeup was a dark, smokey eye with blue and purple tones that went perfectly with her outfits for the evening. Ariel used the liquid-to-powder waterproof eye shadow COVERGIRL Intense ShadowBlast in Platinum Pop #805 because its built-in-primer helps makeup last longer so that your look is in place throughout the evening. He also used a selection of shades from COVERGIRL Eye Enhancers 3-Kit Shadows in Golden Sunset #115 and Blazing Blues #117.

To finish her eyes, Ariel used LineBlast 24 Hour Eyeliner and several layers of COVERGIRL LashBlast 24 Hour Mascara to bring out her lashes.

Shaila’s lips were kept natural-looking to balance the intensity of her eyes. Ariel used COVERGIRL LipPerfection Lipliner in Smoky #205 and then created a unique lip color for Shaila with the double-ended lip stick COVERGIRL Blast Flipstick in Snap #845.

HAIR
Shaila has long beautiful hair so Ariel created soft and natural waves so she would wear her hair down. He first protected her strands by applying Pantene Heat Protection & Shine Spray on damp locks before blow-drying.

Then, he rolled up hair section by section and pin set it until the very last moment. As Shaila was almost ready to go, Ariel released all pins and shook her hair in place with his fingers.

To seal the look with maximum hold, he sprayed Pantene Anti-Humidity Hairspray and Shaila was ready to shine!
